Back when I lived in Oklahoma, and had ER#1, I was also a bike rider. The local Yamaha dealer got bikes in, in cardboard boxes, with an inner frame of Phillipine mahogany. It was mostly sticks of 1.5 X 1.5 and rough, but I got literally tons of it.

Free, and they were glad to get rid of it.

I wonder if Dennis Easter Yamaha is still in Lawton?

I have looked around too. Unless I go to the big box store, my next closest reliable for good wood is going down to woodcraft 1 1/2 hrs away. I checked craigslist, but they mainly had flooring pieces. so I am still watching. I just picked up some wood at woodcraft yesterday, so I am okay for now, but I am going to need to get some more soon if I am going to keep turning and things.

If you are coming from the north try Siwek in Nordeast Minneapolis. They have a lot of S3S hardware and veneered sheetgoods. they also run a sawmill in Jordan.

Also nearby is Youngblood, but I wasn't as pleased with the prices or that you needed to talk to someone inside to get prices. I got the impression that Youngblood doesn't want one off purchases.

Hi dear am newbie here and i want to say that the wood of different species of trees varies considerably in weight, strength, and appearance. Softwood is normally uniform in grain (texture) and color; hardwood, in which the rays are more prominent and the arrangement of tissues is variable, produces lumber in which the grain may run vertically or horizontally and be coarse or smooth. The manner in which a log is cut results in lumber with thin or wide ray markings. A log cut horizontally shows the concentric annual rings; lengthwise cuts through the center are marked by thin vertical ray lines; and lengthwise cuts through the outer sections show the wood's characteristic wavy grain and wider ray markings.

Otherwise I am trying to find wood cheap at big box store, or getting wood from Woodcraft, not so cheap. Picked up 4 pieces from woodcraft last weekend, and it was $30+ for 4 pieces, 2 12 inch and 2 24 inch.

His web site doesn't appear to be working right now. A friend of mine who is a professional cabinet maker went with me since I had never bought rough cut lumber before to help me find what I needed for my project. He said this guy has quality stuff for very good prices and that he was going back himself.

Picked this pile up at a local Garage sale for $7.00. SWMBO already has plans for the barn boards. The widest one is quarter sawn Oak. It seams a shame to make yard art out of it. Think I will set it aside (hide) for my own project.[ATTACH]19017[/ATTACH]

There is an on line auction in La Crosse Wis. every week. Awhile back I bid on and won a lot of miscellaneous boards that worked out to be about $.31 per board foot. The lot consisted mostly of quarter sawn white Oak and steam dried black walnut. With a mix of Birch, Maple, Sycamore (I think) and other species I could not Identify. It is mostly 8ft to 10ft long 6in to 12 in wide and what I would consider #1 common grade. Now all that needs to be done is fire up the trusty old SS and start making sawdust.
