I thought the picture with the toggle switch was an earlier machine? I thought machine #2 was the one with the sticker?

My 1985 and 1987 have stamped serial numbers on the vent plate. When did they move to stickers? My 1991 has the "c" headstock with the sticker. The problem with the stickers is they end up looking like the one in the picture -faded and falling off.

Update: also note the Rballard at 11am today said it was in the back of his truck, so it isn't the picture of the one in the shop. Also, he posted that picture earlier in this thread when talking about the first machine.

One thing's for sure - SS made their serial #s really confusing over the years

Hi,

Not that it maters in this case but it is unclear when the new "C" headstock started shipping in 1991. I personally have a headstock dated 021391 that is still a "B".

Here is a thread that mentioned C headstocks were introduced in 1991. Nick Engler posted later and he didn't disagree with that info.

You're absolutely right - I went out and checked my '79 (Serial #27995) and the # is stamped on the metal plate that surrounds the high-speed jointer drive - actually according to the SS page that means my unit was actually made in the tail-end of '78, which makes sense based on when I remember my Dad purchasing it (early '79). It also just lists the # as 27995 and not 027995, so your new find must actually be a Mark V 500 from 1990.

I believe it is a 79 and i was able to get it working last night, but failed to get some pics. Problem was the sped changer was stripped. Will try and get some tonight. This SS will actually be a Christmas gift for an uncle.:)
