He had his friend in the shop unbolt it right before closing and left one bay door unlocked. He backed his truck in and used a vehicle lift to get it in his truck. He planned his exit to avoid the cameras. He almost did so but didn't realize corporate installed 2 extras after the supply totes went missing for long enough.

He had big stones, I'll give em that...

There was one with a speed changer posted at a similar price a few months ago. I probably should have snagged that one, but I still haven't quite figured out how to shoehorn another SS into my shop.

I have friends in law enforcement and retail that say most of the stuff you see on Craiglist like that, and before Craigslist existed at the flea market, is in fact stolen. They aren't necessarily stealing it off of shelves, its crates from the stock room or even upstream in supply chain. I never buy from anyone selling NIB, especially when they have quantities.

Lots of things get stolen, big and small every day. It's not hard. Last summer a competitor found a significant number of boats missing from a locked yard that has 24/7 security and guarded gates. Boats. Try sticking that under your coat and walking off.

99% of what I do in the garage is mechanic work and I own lots of Stanley as well as Harbor Freight. There is a valid reason. I call them my second string. You wouldn't abuse nice tools but you are tempted often. When that happens, I call a timeout and sub one of my bench players in. If I put a 4 ft iron pipe over my 1/2" drive Stanley ratchet and break it I just go back to WalMart and get another one for $7. I also have a box full of 7mm, 9mm, and 11m offbrand sockets that I hammer onto 8mm, 10mm, and 12mm bolts that get rounded off.

That said, I sure as heck wouldn't "call for an appointment" to look at someone's collection of Stanley screwdrivers, especially with no price. I live near Branson and that seems to be the thing to do down there...I'm sure I pass up lots of good deals but if you can't tell me what you have and give at least a ballpark then I'm not going to bother.

I was looking at this one and an email or 2 to the gentleman who posted it on craiglist says it is Serial #204220 which I'm guessing would make it probably a 510? from the mid 80's. From the pics it looks pretty basic, but in fairly good condition. $350. What do you'all think? On the plus side it is local to me!! Said he has had some response, but apparently still has it. Any suggestions/ comments are welcome. thanks

You are correct about the year...off the top of my head I'd say 1986. It should have a double bearing quill (one of the first few thousand that did). I think the headstock in the 80's was the same for the 500, 505, and 510 models, but that ad is for a 500 (based on the tables, rip fence, etc)

I don't know if that is a good price in Atlanta. It's not a bad price here in Dallas but it's high-priced for Houston. If you are patient, you can probably find a 510 for not too much more.

I would offer $250 and see where it goes from there.

Even though this was local the gentleman would only email me even though I listed my phone #. 2 emails over a week apart just to get a response and then when he finally asked when I would like to come by to see it...... he must have sold it? because the posting has been deleted. I'm guessing he had more than a few responses and was just lining me up in case they didn't buy it. Never have had much luck with craiglist.........

Yeah, I was going to offer $250, but no more than $300. So it appears it was just a 500 model. Hm, ok, I guess I need to do some more research HERE! Oh well, thanks for the comments and suggestions. Reading some of the posting here on the Shopsmith Forum, I can see many of you are very knowledgable of Shopsmith's, THANKS

Yeah there are a few others for sale on craiglist here in the Atlanta area in the $350-$1000+ range, but not as local as that one was.

Another one popped up on craiglist with no pic and not much info. A couple of weeks went by and since it wasn't to far from me, in Buford GA, I decided to call the seller and go take a look. Said he only had one other response in the past month (ie the weak ad with no pics) so was eager to show it right then. Didn't seem to know to much about it as I asked what model it was and he didn't appear to know what I was talking about. So off to Buford to go take a look. Turns out he had bought it from a garage/carport sale, ie it was kept out in the carport? and he had it stored at his storage unit which meant he never used it and no way to test it/ run it. It was/is a 510, from 09-13-94 with the 520 table upgrade!!!!! He also had the bandsaw and the dc3300 dust collector, but that was about it. He was asking $400. Having learned a vast quantity of knowledge from you'all , I pointed out to him that it was missing quite a few parts and no way to test the headstock. But after starring at it for a minute or two, I decided $200 for the SS, $100 for the Bandsaw and $100 for the dust collector, ie $400. Next thing I know we are removing the legs and loading it into my Scion xB and it actually fit!!!

So I have started to clean it, but that's about it, ie haven't tried to run it yet as know way to know what's going on with the headstock until I figure out what I need to do before I try that. It is set up with the disc sander and the motor appears to turn freely so that is a good sign? Any suggestions to point me in the right direction with the headstock would be most welcome.

I have been VERY patiently acquiring some of the missing pieces from ebay, ect.
power tools book - 8.50 (4th edition brand new?)
manual and self study guide - 15.00 (1993)
tailstock - 15.00 (not the one pictured, but cleaned up ok and some gray spray paint )
miter gauge - 45.00 (real nice!)
allen wrench - 5.00

saw blades
drill chuck
tool rest
centers
power coupler (could of swore he gave me that, but if I find it then I have a spare)

Looking to "SAW WOOD" in the future!!!!!!
