Very good job !
I have been following your thread with great interest and I too plan to build myself a more suitable bench.
Do you plan to use bench dogs to complete your side vise like those round one at Lee Valley

I haven't decided yet about dogs but if I do I will use 3/4 in round holes and make my own dogs from hardwood.
I am going to add a Mortised Bench Stop like the one in this thread.
What is it?
Also I am thinking of trying to make some hold fasts similar to the ones in this picture. I will keep this thread updated as I add "features" to the bench.

Please keep on informing us about your bench and its accessories.
It is very interesting and thanks for making us part of the process.

A recent thread by pieceseeker (
What is it? ) reminded me of the mortised bench stops that I had previously seen in the Lee Valley catalogue.
So I stopped by last week and bought one.
This morning I spent a couple of hours in the shop and installed it in my workbench.
Mortise cut.

Stop installed

Stop in use.

It works well but I may get another one to mount facing the front of the workbench a few inches back and to the right of the first one to support the work in two directions.

Talk about pictures for words!
OK, I'm weird I guess. When I see a pic (the other) of a new vise (or newly faced in present case, almost same thing) I say to myself "ah, that's nice, should get a lot of use out of that one!" or some such thing.
But when I see that "old" vise with those "experienced" faces, my heart beats a wee quicker, my internal temp goes up a tad, and I just
feel like I wanna
touch that thing, I wanna
u s e that thing!
Here's hoping those new pieces- and that spiffy new router plane too, btw- get lots of work for lots and lots of years til they too are "broke in"!

I agree. The wedges keep everything rock solid and are a wonderful part of the Paul Sellers design.

That vise has served quite well for the last few years, though a bit prone to racking.
Last month I was at my local Habitat for Humanity ReStore on a Monday and they had just got in about twenty, old, made in England, Record #52E quick release vises.
They were priced at $35.00 each and I am happy to say that two of them followed me home.

The rest had all sold by Friday
I think they must have come from a local high school that was torn down this summer, (replaced by two new high schools).
Anyway here is the obligatory picture.

One is cleaned up oiled and mounted on the bench but still needs wooden faces for the jaws.
I am thinking the other will be a face vise once it is back in good order.

Curious about that lever beside the lead screw. Lock?
Incorporate a 'peg' to engage work pieces with the movable face.
At first I thought that was what the lever was for, but do not see the
rising part'.

That is the quick release lever.

Squeezing the curved lever disengages the half nut and allows the moving jaw to slide open and closed.

This model did not come with a built in dog but I will add one when I install the wooden faces.
