It looks like I will be making some revisions. The boxes fit where I want them to fit BUT the rolling in and out in a close to straight line is not as easy as I first thought. It takes several tries to get them in place... and this leads a bit of frustration which I don't need.

I have a modification that shouldn't be to hard to do and it will give my 3/4" more space on each of the 3 drawers that make the set. That should be more then enough play.

The other option would be to have come up with some sort of guide system but I believe that would have been a lot more work than what I'm planning to do.

I will have a revised one to show maybe tomorrow. I started on the process but now it is supper time and after the white lions to watch so that is it for today.

Insetting the wheels is the first thing that came to mind. I assume they are interfering with adjacent wheels.

A simpler alteration would be to put sloped guides in front of the wheels(on each drawer) to steer the incoming drawer out away from the its neighbor's wheel.

Turns out I had about 20 minutes of time after supper so I went out and finished one drawer. The inset is about 3/8" of total movement on each side. When I get two more done I will be able to test and see if that is enough.

I finished the first 3 drawers which allows me to test the system. The inset has fixed the issue, at least for now. I might add a strip guide system at some future point but for now I'm happy with the small amount of extra space.

Of course this was done with empty drawers so I may feel different when they are loaded, that is my next test. I also want to check how many pounds of load I've got.

If you did this, but made your recess angled a few degrees you could put negative camber on the wheels which would reduce the amount of steerage at a given amount of push. That eliminates the need for the additional piece of material in your sketchup drawing.

You could also find a way to make "stickier" contact patches to the ground which would further dampen steering. Maybe glue/melt one of those thick rubber bands onto the hub.

I think the initial 'problem' was the wheel interfering with adjacent wheels.

Right, as is this would reduce but not cure the problem.

However, if you are leaning the wheels you're taking the outer edges off the ground and eliminating the need for 3/4" wide wheels. If you cut from them from between 1/4" to 1/2" stock you could completely conceal them.

Further, you could toe them in a few degrees to roll even straighter, so if any wheel did overhang they are slightly angled away from eachother and will defelct rather than hang up.

I do not think Ed intends to get into wheel suspension design.:D

I think we are making this far too involved for wheels on drawers rolling on the floor!;)
