There are some threaded inserts that will have to be either sacrificed or relocated.
I had given them no thought until just now. Four of them are used in the original design to secure the router insert (these would likely go away). Two additional ones are used to secure feather boards (if wanted, these could be relocated).

So with a little help from Dusty (thank you) it seems that it is at least feasible to use the shopsmith router table.
As has been posted some additional support might be in order and certainly support on the outlaying portion of the table will be needed.
You will also have some major modifications to the table top, probably best done with a template and router so it now becomes down to if you feel like this is the way to go or not.
