I only know that USPS is making residential delivery of small packages for UPS.

I am not aware of the inverse.

I tend to buy fewer things like clips, screws, etc. for SS because they charge so much. Some pieces that could easily have been dropped in an envelope and cost less than $1 have charges of $8. I do have a list of small parts that I would like to have and will generally add them to a larger order. The problem for me is that there are so few large things I want from SS that the list of smaller items can wait for many many months. It has also become disheartening when I order something from SS only to find the same item is available locally at a significantly reduce price. I am slowly accumulating a list of stock items that I can buy locally versus what I need to buy from SS.
I do intend to support SS as much as I can. I want them to stay around for a very long time, I'm just more cautious regarding what I buy from them.
What I'd really like is to use my amazon prime for shipping form Shopsmith !:D

I just checked my invoice on the SS planer dust chute bottom I ordered. The part was $28.46. Postage was $8.49. Postage is 29.83% of the part cost. Call it 30%.

My mailman (a Shopsmith owner!!), told me that FedEx and UPS will send items through USPS for residential, especially if it can match flights or shipments that can leave sooner than theirs are scheduled.
Costs however are very screwy. I can get a used planer shipped to my door as "residential" through FedEx for $40, but UPS wants $68 and USPS wants $72!!

Ive also been told of the games that the upper management are playing at the USPS. Seems they are even less competent than members of Congress!!:eek:

My son lives and attends school in Grand Rapids, MI, They have a Woodcraft not far from him. Recently I had him go and get a part and mail it to me. It cut the postage/handling cost that Woodcraft wanted in half.

When you ship something for $60 all you care is that it gets there.
When SS ships the same thing back for $90 they know it not only has to get there but be usable. They also know if it does not get to you it is going to be their problem not yourself. They will have to spend the time and money spent on finding out what happened and why and probably replacing your order. And if it does get to you and isn't working they have to spend the money to ship it back to them and etc.

I don't have a problem with a $90 shipping charge of a headstock. Where I have a problem is $8 shipping of $28 of parts.

Where I have a problem is the PO(USPS) only has flat rate priority boxes and my stuff is light. No 'regular' priority boxes in sight. Parcel post is usually the last to get 'loaded'.
