Totally STUMPED!!!!!

I know, new guy here, but I was just reading and thought I'd throw one out there.

Top and bottom measure same. Left box is square on both sides, right box is square on the left not on right. Are you sure the right side outer board isn't bowed ? Does the square touch in the corner when sat flat at both top and bottom and not touch at the end the same in both corners ?

Fresh look at it this morning, put the square on the right side top. internally, against the right side vertical, same thing!!! Right side ply wood is bowed in the vertical center, making it "appear" to be out of square. Sorry Beatnik, saw/came up with it before reading your post tonight. You still get the cigar though!!LOL.
Thanks all you guys, and yes JPG, you said it, need to know the why so no recurrences, well said.

BD and Charlese, what kinda name is Charlese anyway?? No offence, just never came across it B4, or is it just a forum call sign?
I agree with both about working with wood, and I understand and accept that, I dont strive for lunar landing accuracy from the shop, but when something appeared to be almost a 1/4" out in 18", that is out of my acceptance range and want to know why when all measurements are in sync. Since this was for a carcasses for a work bench, I used plywood, I am a solid wood guy usually for projects, so curve here, and to get max yield, the outer grain layer is running the short length, contrare to usual practice, that is why the bow from top to bottom, which would have been pulled out with fasteners if grain ran the other way. Lesson learned!!! Now for JPG's wrath!!!!!LOL!!!!! JPG.

Lucky guess, seemed to be the only other possibility if everything was measuring correct and the other side was square.

Hey buddy, I'm with completely with you and JPG on the burning need to understand why actual results don't match theoretical results. And you may have noticed that I did not question the correctness of any of the information that you had already posted!

The right side of my brain was pleasantly tickled by your "lunar landing accuracy" metaphor. But the left side was simultaneously squawking "What accuracy -- they finally landed it somewhere well off-target in the intended huge crater, mere seconds before running out of fuel!!!"

I watched that particular drama "live and in living color" on TV at the ripe old age of 11. And even then, I knew that it was something momentous. That would impress all my children, and my grandchildren as well.

BD, ya I dont remember how old I was, born in 52, but watched it too, I guess when you gotta put er down, you put er down!!! All done with slide rules to boot!!! Texas Instruments was just coming into its own via the space race and Nasa money.

Absolutely! Nothing but slide rules were used. I used one in college and I still marvel at what they accomplished. My dad (WWII vet) was a rocket scientist/rancher. They used nothing but SR's during the missile technology buildup that started after WWII using captured V2 German rockets.....

Now, this thread has been very interesting to a green hand. I was thrilled that sometimes (most of the time?) machined wood will deceive you and let you down. Then to find out that the real "woodworking" begins by making the pieces work together through artistry and workmanship.

Then, it turns out that the wood pieces were right after all and we are back to precision work. I am confused ....

I would love to think that there is more artistry in wood working than engineering. Is that a bad outlook?
