JPG, Bob, there is another variable in this equation.

The width of the belts.

The original instructions say to NOT loosen the setscrews on the center sheave assembly. That is wrong, because now, belts are NOT 1/2 inch wide at the top.

Bob, with the center sheave, (the center pulley assembly) off the machine, and both belts in hand, loosen one side of the center pulley assembly outer sheave.
You want to set it up so one belt is almost bottomed out, and the other belt is sitting level with the top of the sheave. Now, tighten down the setscrews.

Install the center sheave assembly onto the speedchanger, with the new belts, and check out the adjustment. You should be able to adjust from one pulley sitting flush with the top, and the other pulley ALMOST touching bottom.

You also need to raise or lower the motor, to achieve the correct tension on the belts. It's looser than you think, especially with Skip's belts. If it is slipping with a heavy load, drop the motor, just a tiny bit.

Oh, one more thing.

I've had both speedchangers set up on my various machines.

I've NEVER looked at the 1/5 or 1/8 readout. I look at the center sheave, and the belts.

Thanks guys, lots of info, when I get the belts and get the tubes cleaned up, we will revisit this for sure.

I did play and cleaned up the speed changer yesterday, really good shape, and see how it works. Everything moves real smooth. What is cup grease for the shaft the pulleys/sheaves rotate on. I am thinking it is bearing grease, like for wheel bearings on a trailer. I love AmsOil synthetic grease for that. Or is a good machine oil okay, or too thin. Plan on setting it on the low speed setup. Have plenty of other special purpose tools for there intended high speed use.

Cup grease as in wheel bearing cup. I think grease is better than oil since there is considerable side load.

is the 0-8 speed changer the same as the 0-5 speed changer except for the center step on the pulley sheave and the indicator? i.e. is the speed range the same except for the belt positioning limit created by the step? i.e. is the speed range extended at settings 6 through 8 and the same at 0 through 5?

JPG, the speeds 0-5 are the same on both models. The missing 6 to 8, is because of that step. (The belt can't go in as far.)
