shopsmith 5 noise when I turn to hight speed

ok I dropped the motor pan but I could not find the dang roll pin but I got lucky and found one in my shop that I cut down to size and it works.
I fired it up and she seems to be changing speeds nicely
but the sound/noise is still there .tomorrow I am going to try and set the high speed tuning thing and see if that helps .
on another note I noticed the shaft in this pic looks weird . maybe it was broken off and repaired with liquid steel or something.this thing is a lot of fun .can't wait to get her up and running on some wood.

I'd say LOOK for that Retaining Loop. I MIGHT be the source of the noise, AND check the fan sheave clearance.

That is 'normal'. The aluminum part is die cast onto the steel shaft. That is flash that 'leaked'.

If the floating sheave is still moving at high speed, the floating sheave may be clanging against the fan sheave. Did you measure the top width of the motor belt? If too small that could happen.

FWIW these beasts tend to be noisy especially as the keys and keyways wear(get sloppy).

High speed adjustment is definitely on the list. Pay close attention to the belt position on the motor pulley. If the belt is too narrow, it will not ride close to the periphery at 'fast'.

however I lost track of the method to set the High speed adjustment
can someone please tell me or put up a link of how it is done again

after that if I still have noise I am going to measure the top width of the motor belt and see id that is OK
and check the fan sheave clearance
and I still have that wacked out power cord to deal with.

The move the fan sheave out away from the motor is a temporary 'fix' at best. That problem is unlikely to change with speed adjustments. So I think that is best left alone until proven to be the cause.

After again listening to the video, I still mostly hear what I think is sheave slop. It is unclear to me when the offending noise is occurring in the video vs more 'typical' sounds.

Now I did not see anything on the control sheave pic that reveals the control sheave hitting the quadrant bracket, so a high speed adjustment may not be a magic bullet.

Do realize the belt width affects the range of motion of the movable sheaves. Sorry to be repetitive, but measuring the belt top width is to me a proper starting point.

My gut feel is worn key/keyways. Removal(fairly easily done) will be the proof.

I put a Mic on the belt and it is 17/32 so I guess it is OK
however something weird did happen when I tried to adjust the fan sheave out a 16'th
the instructions called for to line the Long square Key at the bottom of the motor Pan,and then put a Allan wrench in the hole at the bottom of the motor Pan and loosen the set screw ,but the set screw ant there .for some reason the set screw ant in line with the long Key.
so I loosened the set screw in the fan pulley .and I raised the fan pulley up a 16'th of an In. by placing 2 washers in between the pulley and the motor Pan.I then lined up the set screw hole in the fan pulley with the Long square Key and tightened the set screw ,but then when I pulled out the washers I was using for shims under the fan pulley it went right back down where it was before ,:mad:
I powered it up and the same noise was there .
funny thing is I went to loosen the set screw and try it again and the thing was back out of line with the long square Key.
so I am scratching my head on this one

I think if I could get that big spring off the motor pulley I might can tell what the heck is going on
does any one have a link to how to take it off.
it looks scary
