Thanks everyone for their input and info. It is very much appreciated, i have learned a few things

. I have managed to find a local supplier that isn't charging the earth for the bearings....so fingers crossed it works out and they can supply the correct ones.

You want C1 clearance bearings.

It seems as though 10e bearings are hard to find for two reasons. First is a dimensional problem and second is the load rating (C1).

I thought that both were going to be issues that could be resolved simply by opening the wallet a little further. That may not be the case.

The 202KLL3 bearing measures 16,35,14.4; the 14.4 dimension seems to be the sticker. I could not locate any current, popular vendors who offer this. However, some offer a substitute that would require a shim to make up the difference.

The other major difference is the load rating. I always thought that the load rating referred to something different than it actually does. Basically a C1 rated bearing is expected to last longer (more revolutions) under a specific load than are lesser rated bearings.

I always thought that a C1 bearing was expected to provide less runout (be more tightly spec'd). That does not seem to be the case.

Now in practice, it may be true that Fafnir bearings were more precision than their competitors but that may have been "in the good old days".

I would suggest that equal quality bearings are now available from other vendors like Timken. I would also suggest that "you get no more than you pay for". If low price is what grabs your eye, forget it. Runout numbers like 0.0005" will be unachievable.

My opinion: If you want to make your Mark V drill press perform on an equal basis with an old reliable 10e, you are going to have pay more. If you are simply retrofitting a 10e, you will also pay more but will also have to tolerate those shims.

A couple of years back I was looking for this information when I was doing the 10ER that I gave my brother. I copied this from the yahoo site, sorry no date on it.

Fafnir 202KDD6 - a 5/8" id x 3/32" thick bushing is needed with this bearing to position the front bearing collar correctly.

2.0472 OD (52 MM)
.5906 W (15 MM)
Original felt shielded Fafnir 205KLL2
good substitute double sheided Fafnir 205KDD
SKF 6205ZZ, 6205-2Z
and many other bearing manufacturers with same # as this is a standard bearing

A good source is www.ebatmus.com, they carry both and the quill ones are particularly harder to find. I think the quill ones are about $10 per and the drive sleeve ones are about $15-$18 per bearing. So if you want/have to replace all four it can add up. Plus shipping's about $10.

Skip is the source. I called him when I started my 10ER restore 6 or 8 months ago. He told me he doesn't stock them any more because it is cheaper for someone to just order them themselves.

Quill is Fafnir 202KLL3 and drive sleeve is Fafnir 205KLL2. Skip buys them from A & W Bearing in Dallas. They sell the genuine Fafnir bearing. BTW, Timken bought Fafnir a number of years ago so you may get Fafnir bearings in a Timken box.

I ordered mine from A & W and the sales lady Lana was very nice. She even knew Skip. The 202KLL3 were $21.44 and the 205KLL2 were $27.09.

As some have said they can be found cheaper but they are not genuine Fafnir. For my money I will put the originals in knowing I will never have to replace them.
