I recently received bowl buffs and SS lathe adapter from Don Pencil. Very well constructed adapter (Shopsmith should contact him about reselling some of his products), the bowl buffs seem fine.

Not quite what you're trying to do, but perhaps you could use the adapter to build something out of a piece of all-thread.

I just looked at mine and it turns out to be made by "Don Pencil", the quality is excellent. I got them at a local woodworking show and they had lots of stuff for the Mark V.

I just did a quick google and he's got a site but I didn't see any obvious mention of SS stuff.. However, it looks like a bunch of his stuff will fit different machines and I'm sure SS is one of them..

Thanks for all your subsequent posts since my last (it's been a bear of a week with my lil' huggers in class...) Now that it's the weekend, and I can again engage in sawdust therapy (as well as crafting the finest in sawdust and custom firewood), I'll clip and snip from various posts in reply:

I'm sorry to stand you up for this info, as it's the week's end and I'm just now getting back to ya...
Anywho, the thing is 18 in. long and 3/4in. in diam. I also thought 'bout going the OTC route (one of my favored paths) but my metal-working skills/tools aren't up to the task. Oh, I could fabricate the thing, but to do it to the degree of safety at 700 rpms, THAT puts a spasm in the ol' sphincter...Hence a purchase...

You ARE da man! It turns out -pun intended- that this adapter is EXACTLY what I need!! YAY! I've left a phone message with the good folks at Don Pencil, just to make sure said adapter from Pencil, is indeed, a #2 Morse one one end, and a ShopSmith setscrew adapter on the other.

To draw closure to this WONDERFUL (to me anyway) thread, I'm gonna make a hardwood collet (a la Ed) and use it (hopefully) until I feel the need to spend the $20 on Pencil's adapter (and the shipping on said)...

For the buffing adapters, look under buffing, lathe adapters, for the following description:
1/2 and 5/8" shaft w/set screw x 3.75" LATHE ADAPTOR

The threads are, I believe, 3/8"X16.

Maxwell, this does NOT have a morse taper on it. The Don Pencil item is a piece of aluminum about 4" long. In one end is a 5/8" smooth bore hole w/setscrew in side to attach to the SS. In the other end is a 3/8" threaded hole, designed to accept his bowl buffs which are simply 3/8" bolts through various types of cloth. I would think that the adapter could be used, at your own risk, with 3/8" thread all, or other gadgets that use that size thread.

I found a better solution, I called http://bestwoodtools.com/ and spoke to a wonderful lady from Tennessee. The sell all kinds of adapters for lathes and she said they would be happy to provide one for the Shopsmith that goes from 5/8" plain to 1" x 8 TPI. Normally their adapters sell for $59.99 but for the SHopsmith they are $49.99 made in USA.

They also sell excellent lathe tool rests out of hardened steel that fit the old Shopsmith 3/4" hole, I asked and she said they would also make one for the newer 1" hole on the universal tool rest banjo they just need to get the correct length. It is a modular system so you only need one post and can put on lots of tool rests up to 12" long and they have other things that fit the post as well.
