I've used Linux so long I just can't imagine ever going back to any version of Windows...
Linux will speed up many older computers and keep it useful without changing hardware.
If you don't want to quit Windows but are having browser headaches give Opera a try. It's light and fast.
My wife uses Firefox and I have it on my system but I normally use Chromium which is the Linux version of Chrome.
I used to run Windows / Linux dual boot but Windows 8 got to acting up and I just dumped it.

Dusty: I don't use Sketchup but I have never found anything on-line that will not work with Linux. I do pic re-sizing on line and a fair amount of stuff as cloud computing and it all works fine. I spend a zillion hours on Ancestery. Com which has become quite complex and it works perfect.
I'm not a gamer so I can't speak to that scene.

On our Android phones we run the Opera for Android browser and I find it quite handy.
