I think if I were to do this again:
I might make the "top" part of the legs a little shorter, this would reduce the circle at the top having the effect of moving the table slightly to the side and it would clear the tube.........
OR
I could have made the top slightly smaller, it would not have taken much to get it to fit........
OR
I could have thought about it for a while and came up with another method of doing the drilling.
Since I had the opportunity to play with this for a few minutes I wanted to post this follow up.
Since the use of the shopsmith and its table system is still the way to go and since it was suggested I went ahead and used the gauge I still had set to adjust a second gauges angle so I could use that in the setup.
Next I set the shopsmith up for the drilling operation, vertical in this case. I used the tall fence extension I have for the 520 mounted to the rip fence. This surface is now the reference surface and the angle I had established needs to be from this surface.
Since I'm not setting up to do the real drilling I just adjusted close to the angle so you can see that the method is going to work fine.
I also did not bother clamping but in real life you need to do that as the bit is at such an angle that the center of the bit is not providing any help and it would be possible for the bit to pull/walk the wood rather then making a clean cut at the start.
Anyway this seems to be a pretty clear cut way of making the holes.
Had I taken the time to think this through this last solution seems to be the easiest after fudging it. Certainly if I had more holes to do or an expensive piece of wood involved I'd go this way.
So maybe we can all keep this in mind for future use.
