The intended female couplings (dust collector, lower saw guard, elbow, wand, jointer, etc) all measure very close to 2.285" (nominal 2 1/4") and they all have a slight taper.

I said 2 1/4" a few posts back, but a fella out in Montana measured them more carefully than I. So I then said 2 5/16"(+-). Closer examination in daylight leads me to say it is somewhere in between.

The male ends are very close to 2 1/4" od. The female fittings are larger and close to 2 5/16" id. The male ends are tapered getting larger further from the end.

I totally agree with everything else!!!!!(except the woodcraft comment/I have no experience with their hoses).

It should come as no surprise if one has had different hoses etc. over the years. Standardization does not exist between brands. The Dust Deputy has stepped ports to accommodate them.

Yes, I used the 2 5/16 number but they all vary, the SS as well as the Woodcraft fittings. Mostly 1/64 to 1/32 less (2 1/4 Nominal). Look at the label on the Woodcraft coupler. It is marked 2 1/4 but none of the fittings I have here actually measure 2 1/4 including the SS ones. I disagree that SS fittings are different than other brands. I have a mixture of SS and Woodcraft fittings and they are all interchangeable. See my post with the pictures. The screw in end on the right is Woodcraft. It is fitted to the right hand elbow which is SS and the other end of the SS elbow is fitted into a coupler that is Woodcraft. All of my 2 1/2" hoses have Woodcraft screw in ends and they fit all of the SS tools and fittings.

The pictures show two more examples of interchangeability. The first one is a Woodcraft hose end plugged into the SS sanding drum insert. The second one is a SS elbow plugged into a Peachtree flexible hose assembly.

It has nothing to do with the end that plugs into a tool or another fitting or the fittings themselves. It has to do with the threaded end that screws into the hose. SS does not sell the threaded end separately so I don't know why it would ever be an issue.

I agree, John. By Golly, there are differences if you take the time to measure. That illustrates all dust hoses are not the same. So What?

You can make things more difficult if you wish. You can measure and find fault in various manufactured brands, or do things the easy way by simply buying Shopsmith. If you would rather "fight" this issue, so be it! You can always make a "workaround".

It is the ilk of some that only precise measurements or standards should be allowed to exist. However that is not the way I have found this world. Not even in the Military!

Since I prefer to KISS and avoid stress, I'd return that Woodcraft hose and buy Shopsmith for the bandsaw.

Everything I have here, SS, Woodcraft and Peachtree. I used 2 5/16 as nominal and as I have said they vary slightly from 1/64 to 1/32 less. The female ends are usually a little larger than the male ends as one would expect. You have to measure at the very end because they have a slight taper as you go away from the end.

This discussion is sorta like watching the network new channels. Each contributor puts on that which best "makes their point".

I went to Woodcraft today carrying a couple of the Shopsmith dust collector items with me. I went there with no intention of buying but I did buy a new brush and a union. Both of the Woodcraft items fit quite well on the Shopsmith hoses and elbows. I did not check other pieces because all of the "other pieces" require male ends.

Note that the two new items are different sizes but they both fit ONTO Shopsmith items.

The point is that they are all the same as far as being compatible with each other. All the different brands I have here work together including SS. I am not finding fault or fighting anything and never said anything about precise measurements. There is no workaround since there doesn't need to be. The OP asked a question about the band saw port and why his plain end hose would not fit so I took some measurements and found out that is the case. Then everyone else chimed in (which is fine) but there were some things said that were not right so I took measurements to correct the record. These fittings (all brands) vary by as much as 1/32". There is nothing wrong with that. That is obviously the manufacturing tolerance and that is fine since they all work together.

I have no idea why you returned your Woodcraft hose. Woodcraft hose is all I have here and it works fine with the band saw.

There is no best point to make. My point all along has been that all brands of 2 1/2" DC fittings are interchangeable and that they fit onto and into SS fittings and tools. You have just made that point. It is confusing since Woodcraft marks some as 2 1/2 and others as 2 1/4. But they are in fact the same dimension. The hose is 2 1/2 ID (actual) but the slip together fittings are 2 1/4 (nominal).

Indeed there is no 'best' point to make - other than to summarize the accurate details revealed by multiple paths towards the same goal(understanding).

I often do that because I believe it creates better future understanding.

The gentleman from Montana has done that quite well for this thread. I do not consider him to have any other objective.

Neither do I have negative feelings towards his critique of my measuring(with a ruler ).
