When I loosened the belts to 1/4" deflection the rattling did pretty much stop with no load. Still testing to see if I can live with the belts being that loose.

I think "no load" is the most critical condition for under damped acceleration and deceleration. Always over shooting both directions.

Since there is no great amount of torque involved, I would place it in a nuisance category.

I be curious as to the actual source of the 'rattle'. I do not think the nylon coupler would rattle(either end). That leaves 6 bearings as possible culprits.

Is it possible the 'upper' end of the splined shaft is 'whipping'?

Sorry don't understand whipping. This is a new quill placed there by RLF on their last re-build.

Since there is a little play between the splined shaft and the nylon coupler, I suspect there is some speed corrections going on at that speed causing the rattle.

I also put it in the nuisance catagory. As you say, over and under shooting.

Rotating the quill by hand produces absolutely no feel of rough bearings. --Very smooth rotation.

You must have had to move motor mounts to get that deflection. Glad that works for you!

Make sure that the hubs on the auxiliary shaft and the jointer shaft have the set screws tightened properly. I had a rattle in mine when new that sounded like someone was jingling a set of car keys. Both set screws were loose. I also had the set screw in the motor pulley loosen twice before I put some blue Loctite on it. There was a bit of rattling in both instances.
I also agree with JPG that the undamped acceleration and deceleration would play a part and that any load would dampen that effect.
I think that SS says the corrections are in the range of 400 times per second. Any load on the quill would impart a flywheel effect and soften the changing speed.

I be guilty of thinking in terms of the older single bearing quills which needed the internal 'top hat' washer to position the upper end near the center of the quill body. Wobble would be a better choice of words.

i.e. Insufficient thought given prior to saying that!
