I think many of you are being unfair on this issue. It is almost like Extramile should be taken out and burned at the stake.
He stated he had physical therapy and to him it was like torture and did him little or no good and in fact may have slowed his recovery. None of us are Ina position to dispute that. We can tell of how physical therapy helped us but as we all know every body reacts differently to things.

I have heard of physical therapy success stories but I have also heard of disasters from physical therapy.

Instead of making snide remarks about Extramile let us support him as he recovers from this injury no matter the method.

Our bodies ability to 'adapt' is both a blessing and a curse.

When pain is added into the mix, the curse part prevails(hence the bent over folks wandering the planet).

Pain is intended to be an early warning sign(injury is about or already is occurring).

So as far as PT is concerned there is a fine line between 'about' and 'already'.

We have another attribute in that our muscles tend to shrink(shorten/withdraw) when not used(stretched).

Now after a period of inactivity those shrunk muscles have range of motion issues. PT(or 'normal' activity) will correct(stretch) that, but the muscles will complain(pain). Hence the no pain, no gain mantra.

However that must be done in a responsible manner so as to not inflict further(or new) damage. That is where a PT(person) comes in. They should know the 'exercises' to do and the amount of 'pain' that will assure progress(only).

Sadly there is another human attribute that comes into play.(self preservation). If it hurts, it must be bad for me. The PT(person) must be capable of understanding that and help the patient overcome that fear. On the other hand the PT(person) must also cool off the gung-ho person to prevent them from harming themselves.

IMHO moderation with frequent repetition(not rapid) is the key. Gradually increase the range of motion(accept some pain in the interest of progress) but allow time for acclimation(healing?).

Easier said than done fer sure. Positive attitude helps.

Burned at the stake? No, no no! I have been in his situation, and was an extreme doubter. Then I found a good therapist. Made all the difference and I became a convert! My concern is that someone might try to work through the pain and in doing so cause more damage. I did see a rather nasty post earlier that seems to have disappeared..... Not the place for that.

Nasty? No. Highly opinionated, yes. From one who has likely suffered, yes. A solution for the rest of us, no.

BTW thanks for the hands behind the back pec stretch/shoulder blade 'scrunch'. It works already and is quite simple and makes a lot of sense!!!

My shoulder thanks you!

That is good, well, not good, but better than a tear! Still do a few sessions of PT with a good therapist. A good one will not hurt you, but will show you what to do when at home. Mine gave me a printout of gentle exercises to do at home. It really helps.
Ok, I will entertain that. I plan to ask my doctor about what I can do, after getting a cortisone shot. Maybe a couple gentle exercises, to further my rehab!

Oh boy, thanks for small miracles, because if I had seen this particular burning at the stake, I most assuredly would of acted out and I likely would have been KICKED OFF OF THE SITE, FOR EVER.

I am not one to take that sort of abuse without me firing right back at a person and my words would of NOT BEEN KIND. So to this person who decided to burn me at the stake, please understand, I won't take those types of comments lightly.

And yes JPG, this one simple move, certainly is effective. I feel a wide array of stretch, when I do it and OH MY is it ever painful. So I only do it, once or twice daily!

Furthermore, like I said to Chris, I will take his and the others suggestion to my doctor and see if he can locate me a great PT person, who will be both gentle and thorough, with his or her treatment of my injury.

Cortisone shot, worked wonders for 6 days. It has now, pretty much reverted back to just plain pain. I will call the PT person on Monday. Hell, even more things ache now. Maybe, this is a sign, that I have some form of RA, who knows?

Might be a sign that you are getting old. There comes a point in life you are glad for the pain it lets you know you still have whatever hurts :D
