I guess I am a hybrid of both methods. I usually trash my shop during a project and then clean it up at the end. By the end of the project I am usually in the search method of finding tools. My son recently asked me what I miss most from the days of our big shop. My response was without hesitation. His nickname was Duck. I don't remember is actual name. My wife probably does. She did payroll. This guy was great. He would stay every evening after we closed the door and spend two or three hours cleaning and putting tools up. Every morning we would arrive at the shop and it was clean and organized. I do miss him !

Every 6 months I have to conduct a search to find the top of my work bench, which the shop gremlins have covered with a bunch of tools.

I won't go that far, but it can be annoying. It can also be fun, sometimes. I was in school for too many years not to use the skills that were beaten into me! I like to use full, complete sentences, grammatically correct as well. I also do not post after martinis! Yes, I do use the spell checker on my posts!
This post is not meant to be snobby or offensive to those who do otherwise!

WTH is an 'official' acronym?
They ALL started with an 'unofficial' thought by someone.

FWIW, use that noggin for a change. IMHO it keeps alzheimer's at bay.
Not everything is solvable by rote.
Somethings require deduction.
