Well I'll be. :o

That actually works!!!!!!

So it is all about how you pick it up to begin with. ;)
JPG, my leading theory is that you, Skizzity, and Tx_clint (and welcome to the forum, Clint :) ) are all smoking the same illicit substance! ;)

I did mental experiments for five minutes, and then physical experiments for about as long. Regardless of which axes I "flipped" or "rotated" about, I could never reverse the tooth direction, as installed on a bandsaw.

As near as I can tell, the only way to switch the blade from "right-hand rule" to "left-hand rule" or vice versa is to twist it inside-out, as described by rpd in post #3.

Am I missing something?

I was skeptical at first.

I made a loop out of paper. Marked one side with tooth direction.

So start with the tooth side pointing 'up'.

Rotate the loop 180° about a vertical axis.

Rotate the loop 180° about a horizontal axis.

Well that works with the paper marked on the flat side.

Now the blade 'edge' is indeed different. You end up with the same thing.

That is what happens when an 'equivalent' which is not so is used.

So inside out is the only 'fix'.

I goofed!!!! :o

Well shoot, those were fun experiments anyway. And I got to practice my bandsaw blade re-coiling skills to boot -- it took me yet another five minutes to remember how!

I removed my blade and did like I mentioned and got this.

Then I just did it again to put it back.

So guess not.

Thanks Buckeye and Red! I just got back to this thread and was confused/stumped over the rotating and flipping thing. Thanks for taking that theory off of this old mind.

I have not bought any BS blades from the MS, I choose to go to an other place. So I am going to assume it is a MS packaging problem.
I would not lay this on Shopsmith. I am more inclined to believe that the user did this when uncoiling a blade that has been stored/packaged. I coil my blade saw blades when they are not mounted. It is not at all unusual to uncoil the blade and have it inside out.

I have to agree with ERLover. It seems to me that one would have to work to turn a BS blade backwards.

OK, Dusty, how do you coil blades when they are "mounted"? I know you said unmounted but your statement assumes there is a way to do it mounted. How can you do it other than unmounted? I have never had a blade uncoil and have it inside out. Please explain how this can happen since you say that is not unusual.

John B, I bet it was a typo error from Dusty.
But the SS I bought and a BS came with it had an inverted blade mounted on it, plus I bought an Olson from the BBS and when I uncoiled it, it was inverted, maybe my mistake or shipping, I dont know, but over 40 years of using, buying and changing BS blades, I never had that happen it in the past. I did not even know it could happen till just a few months ago!!!!

"I coil my blade saw blades when they are not mounted".

OKAY, in the way of clarification: Anytime that I dismount a band saw blade, I coil it for storage. I do not hang band saw blades any other way. I have kinked too many while hanging uncoiled.

If you store it coiled while uncoiling it you can cause, inadvertently, what we are talking about. The only other way for a blade to transition from right side out to inside out would be for it to be coiled backwards and that could certainly happen.

I know two ways to 'coil' one. Same result either way.

What are the two ways to uncoil them - one correctly, one 'inverted'.
