Can the guard hang up and not drop down to shield the blade?

I considered that possibility. Maybe a piece of wood stuck.

Holy smokes. I'm glad the injury was relatively minor. I always try to be cautious and very deliberate with each move, but there have been more than a few times when I've caught myself doing something and thought "You dam#ed fool! Tryin' to lose a limb or something?"
