Bowl turning problem -- what am I doing wrong?

The finish is finally on the bowl, and I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out. A good portion of the bowl is spalted. I do hope my niece likes the rustic look!

My old can of Minwax satin wipe-on poly had gone bad on me, so I started finishing the bowl with the gloss stuff. The finish built nicely, but it was just too darned glossy for me, at least on this bowl. So first I tried buffing it with some 0000 steel wool, and that worked nicely on the outside. But there were some grooves on the inside of the bowl that I hadn't sanded out completely, and the steel wool didn't buff out the gloss in the crevices. Which of course only served to accentuate the defects. (No pics of those! ) Next I bought a new can of the satin wipe-on poly and applied a couple of coats. That took care of the problem pretty nicely.

Not too bad for a first bowl, I think. The very last photo is of the same spot where I had the tearout problems that prompted this thread. As you can see, the hook I burnished onto the round-nosed scraper took care of that quite nicely.

BD, I am not a turner, but appreciate it, my nephew is, in HS turned a few bowls, many decades ago, that is great,!!!! I just dont need any, and my furniture is FLW style, nothing turned there ether.
But very nice, I can appreciate it

Thanks, Everett, I really appreciate it! I do enjoy turning, and there will be more bowls in my future. Matter of fact, a sawmill owner recently gave me a chunk of box elder with some nice color to it. Having now experienced turning that relatively dry ash, I'm newly motivated to rough-turn the box elder while it is still green. I also have some pizza-cutter handles in the works, with fairly elaborate glue-up patterns. Should be done in time for Christmas.

Now Dick, you're making me sound "pushy". So here is my next (ever-so gentle) woodworking suggestion.

Do a woodworking project for a gift. Especially one for a member of the younger generation. When I give a youngster something I made with my own hands, it's probably the first gift they've ever received that didn't come from a factory. And they are just blown away by that. Teardrops can and do happen.

Just got back from my brother's place, and have pics to prove it. Nuff said.

On a semi-related note, my legs hurt so much today that I can hardly walk. I've put on a lot of years, and pounds, since I did enough of this to stay in shape. I still managed to out-ski the youngsters, but my older brother out-skied me.

NICE FIRST BOWL!!! Now that the bug has bitten wait for the infection ( addiction ) to set in!! I know how people react when they receive a gift like that and the questions that they ask. My wife and I were recently on a vacation with two other couples. My wife's sister said her fiance likes to make bird houses for the backyard which prompted me to make them and the other couple some miniature bird house Christmas tree ornaments.

In Europe most of the larger shopping districts have Mont Blanc gift stores that feature their pens. I like to go in and stare at the pens for a few minutes until one of the reps asks me if I want to buy one. I say "No I am just looking, I make my own pens".
Then I pulled out a stylus pen that I made from a piece of very figured cocobolo and the clerks went bonkers. They asked if I had more and I showed them about a dozen of the Euro pens that match the Mont Blanc pen very closely. The manager wanted to buy all of them!! What a hoot!! The Mont Blanc pen sells for !20 Euros in the EU that's about $125 American. Next time I am going to fill my camera bag with pens and pay for my trip.
Our dinner table grew to ten people and one night I put a bunch of pens on the table and told everyone that they could have their pick as a remembrance of the trip.
I answer their questions with as much mystery as I can just to egg them on. I really get a kick out of it.
