Right! I guess I was thinking that the speed control dial usually turns much easier when increasing speed, but you're correct, that is when the porkchop would actually be pulling on the loop and therefore the bearing. The spring at the floating sheave at the motor is being allowed to expand, and if that is well oiled, then it slides easily and therefore less pulling is required on the control sheave to get it to open.

I worked up the courage to try putting the bearing in. Went and got a 7/8" deep well socket, drilled a 1-1/8" hole in a 2x4 to set it part way in to hold it perpendicular to the 2x4. Smoothed down a 5/8" wood dowel and used it in conjunction with small faceplate and a washer to provide bearing surface when put in woodworking vice to squeeze the "snount" tight around bearing. Tested it dry first, and it seemed to tighten up fit a little, so I went for it.

Well, bearing seemed to be firmly in place after 24 hours when I tried to pull it out using hand force only, so I re-assembled everything (with no parts left over) and it now runs and sounds smoother and quieter than I remember.
