All special purpose tools are used on the auxiliary side of the headstock. Bandsaw, Jointer, belt sander and strip sander. As a general rule the blade side of the headstock is for sawing, drilling, disc sanding, and some auxiliary jobs such as using a polishing or buffing wheel. An exception would be use of a Power Pro headstock. The lower auxiliary shaft is specifically for the jointer.

Three(4?) exceptions to 'ALL'.

Jig saw

Scroll saw

Belt sander

The belt sander has a shaft on both sides.

The Jig and Scroll saw are bi-directional(rotation direction of the input shaft does not matter).

For a special application(lathe tool sharpening using the appropriate attachment), the strip sander is mounted to the quill side.
