It is just a little early for June bugs. I grew up in a small town in Illinois along the Mississippi river. I remember a 4th of July fireworks event on the river that got completely disrupted by a huge swarm of June bugs. They came in with no notice and all you could do was run to the car and go home. Saw no fireworks that year and I had a heck of a time cleaning up my Dad's car the next day.

I came on a swarm of bugs in Colorado once with legs big enough to BBQ!

Glad I had just filled the washer bottle.

I think South Dakota still has more bugs per square mile then any where though.

:D I was stationed at Ellsworth AFB for 3 years. SD does have it's fair share of bugs. However, as for flying insects I think Antelope Island in the middle of the Great Salt Lake might take the prize. They actually have a sign at the gate shack where you pay the entrance fee that reads..."No refunds given for insect bites".

Let me add the insect "Black Flies" to the list of the most nasty insects. If you have ever been in an area with them you will likely remember it.

They bite through t-shits, socks, anything less then armor plate could be a problem. They coat you! Even if they can't feed they sure try to. If you have bare skin you are going to get a bite no mater how much arm waving you do.

The good thing is the bad season is short, then it gets to just being annoying after that.

I have some pictures I took some years back. I dressed in appropriate clothing and all was well but they were all over me. I don't know how the animals survive them.

Speaking of Mayflies, WI has it share of them. Here are a few videos to let you have a feel for what it looks like when they hatch.

Oh yes, they are probably the worst. I was stationed at CFB Bagotville in Quebec from 1980-1984. We hunted moose about 100 miles north of there. I went back every year after I left in '84 until the Gulf War in 1990. We would spend 30 days in the bush with absolutely no communication with the outside world. The black flies were really bad but it was fall so they were not as bad as they could be. The first week was the worst. They seemed to be attracted to all the perfumey smells of civilization. After a week with no bath things got much better. You would be walking down a trail and turn around and there would be a black cloud following you.
