To remove the Quill on a Model 10E or 10ER first take off the Quill Gage Rod, Washer and Nut. You can remove the Collar too with the other parts attached. With those off, extend the Quill with the Pinion Assembly until the gear teeth disengage. Pull the Quill out while holding the handle of the Pinion Assembly. Unwind (release the spring tension) of the Pinion Assembly by hand to protect the Spring. Never just let go of the handle of the Pinion Assembly allowing it to retract uncontrolled. Doing so can damage the Spring.
