That's actually kinda cool! There are a lot of things that I got, so if you can identify anything else (in the imgur album I identified what I could, some I wasn't sure about), please tell me what they might be! I guess some of the parts don't have to do with the Shopsmith though.

- the two on the right are hubs for the power coupler.

- the one on the left is a Morse Taper Extension, if it is #2 Morse Taper (fits in the tailstock) It could come in handy, Looks a bit odd though so it might be #3 Morse Taper

- At the top is a turnbuckle,

- don't know about the two bars in the middle.

Ok, I took a quick measurement and I think it's a #2 taper, if wikipedia is to be believed. I did some cleaning up on the painted parts. So far, its looking a bit better. Now I wait for the evaporust to come in.

Wooden base. Seems like it's in decent condition. Might just give it another coat of paint to make sure they stay that way. Speaking of paint, I was thinking about giving all the cast parts a new coat of paint. Was curious what you guys think about it/ tips you might have. Probably won't do it until the spring or summer (who knows when that will be in Ohio) so I can give them a good wash and the paint can actually dry.

I enjoyed seeing the pictures of your Mark 2. I didn't know the bench "tubes" that look like rounded top "C" channels are actually wood. My Mark 2, that I recently bought, has round metal bench tubes. As was said before protect the belt cover, they are commonly missing or broken. Mine is missing but luckily I have a picture of the speed chart. My Mark 2 is a "Greenie" and its manual is Copyright 1958. Yours is a later Mark 2 and I am now guessing Yuda changed the color on the late ones from green to gray. I have never seen a "Goldie" Mark 2 and the Mark 2 was only made a short time (1958 - 1960). I have seen very few gray ones compared to the number of Greenies I have seen. Below is a picture of mine. I have not done any restoration work on it yet.

Very cool to see I'm not the only one with a Mark 2! I actually didn't know there were different types of it, I just knew they had a very short production run and weren't exactly up to normal ShopSmith caliber. To be honest, they might just be painted 2x4s, but they held up well so I guess I can't complain. I'm no wood expert (yet) so I can't really tell what kind of wood it is. Might look into seeing if I can perhaps get some sort of C channel to replace them in the future if they cause a problem or if I use the machine a lot.

IIUC, they were both metal tubes and wood. I got mine in pieces and it did not have either. Neither do I have the legs.

Y'all take good care of the main table posts and the tool rest post. They be unique to the M2.

Yes JPG, those and many other parts are unique to the Mark 2. This is what I have written about the Mark 2 derived from several sources. It is something I can pull up when anyone wants to know the basic idea of what a Mark 2 is.

Shopsmith Mark 2
1958 to 1960 Mark 2 (5-in-1)
This unit was made at Montgomery Ward’s request and sold primarily by them. It was not made to the same quality standards as the Mark V and was a lower cost alternative. It uses two 2-step pulleys to change the 7 speeds (much like the Model 10E and 10ER) and has lower quality locks to hold the headstock, carriage, etc. in place. It has an extra saw blade slot on the main table (a feature added to the Mark 5 in the 1960’s and 1970’s). Some have round bench tubes while others have “C” channels to connect the bench ends and legs together. It could be purchased with or without the bench. Instructions included making your own wood bench. It has a narrow step shape extension table that creates its own fence and serves as the tailstock with a small block attachment. The Mark V Headstock will fit on the Mark 2 frame. The Mark 2 can also hold and power SPT’s (Special Purpose Tools) made for the Mark 5/V’s and Mark VII/7’s.
The Headrest is a pin-able version of the Base and Arm, much like the new Mark 7.

I will have to make some additions to this information based on what I have learned here.

As Russ said you can install Mark 5 headstock.

Equally if you acquire a Mark 5 bench, you can use a Mark 2 headstock on it.

I remember seeing one done that way.

Hey guys, not sure if I should just continue this thread or make a new one, but here I am with updates! A lot of rags, evaporust, and a bit of elbow grease later, most of the parts are clean! Hopefully I will get some time to actually make something with it very soon (I have an idea for a present for my sister and for my mom)! Right now, I have a few more questions.
1. What's the best way of sharpening the jointer blades? I got them rust free but obviously the blades are pretty dull.
2. Has anyone tried to make a different stand for the Mark 2? I'm not a huge fan of the 2x4 and sheet metal base that it currently has, I was thinking maybe almost a cabinet with casters to go under it.
3. How complicated is it inside the headstock/ how hard is it to take apart/put back together? I haven't opened it yet, but it seems to work so I don't want to try and fix something that I might end up screwing up.
4. Is the best way to prevent rust just to make sure there's a layer of paste wax?
