Speaking of revenue-enhancers, then they could also monitor your speed, and send you computer-generated speeding tickets!

When we signed up for new auto insurance, the company sent us a gadget that plugged in to the socket for the trouble light reader the mechanics use. It recorded mileage, speed and time of day and, locations and sent the info to the co. in real time. Ostensibly, it was to monitor our driving habits to more accurately set our rates. Rates never changed, though. Maybe WA is thinking about using something similar.

YIKES is right. Either I got it wrong before or there has been a big increase in cost. We just got back from a supply run to the base. Gasoline for the car was $2.88/gal. Fortunately, we needed only 7.63 gallons to fill up.

Something I notice at the pump -- I couldn't top off the tank. Once the auto shut off activated I could pump no more.

That is interesting. I wonder if something was wrong with that particular pump. Many times when you first start pumping and hit the valve full open the shut off will activate so you have to start again with less volume.

Dusty, just spoke with our son, also retired AF. He says gas off base has been less expensive for some time. Some Circle K outlets have it for $2.37 according to gas buddy.

Needless to say I was quite surprised. I never even looked at the pump price until I was through pumping. I'll look around now with a more observant eye. I'll also be looking for a cheaper, reliable source.

Years ago I worked for the exchange for about 4 years (1997- 2000) after I retired from the AF. I worked at the Shoppete and gas station. If you remember back to your active duty days (SAC) gas was always cheaper on base by a big amount.

Some time in the mid 80's the States complained and DOD changed the policy. Now AAFES surveys gas prices within a certain mileage from the base and sets prices according to the lowest price in the survey area. The survey is within a few miles from the base. If someone is selling gas for way cheaper 10 or 15 miles away that does not count.

Look at the cheapest prices ( Maverick - Flying J) and see how they compare on base. They should be within a few pennies depending on when your local AAFES gas station did a survey.

If not then talk to the big guy on base and ask why not. It is that way here at Hill AFB. We are always within a penny or two of Maverick.

One other thing I ALWAYS consider is that when you spend money with AAFES ALL the profit goes to supporting MWR on the base and our troops. The other thing is if you buy gas with your Military Star charge card you get 5% off every day.
