It works very much like a pop rivet with the exception that it has an inside thread.
Pop rivits with threads do exist. Requires a special threaded puller pin. Typically smaller threads.

It is possible to "set" the blind nuts without the tool shown by Dusty. Use a bolt with a flat washer the same size thread as the blind nut and with the blind nut in the proper place tighten the bolt against it until it no longer turns. This will compress the compression part of the blind nut. If the blind nut turns in the hole doing it this way will not work. You can use a longer bolt with enough thread to add a nut on the bolt between the head and washer than screw in the bolt and hold it in place than use the nut to tighten against the blind nut. When "set" check to see it looks like the picture of the properly "set" blind nut shown by David.
