The 0-8 sliding sheave doe not have the inner lip that limits the distance the belt can drop into the pulley. i.e. The belt can go all the way to the shaft. IIUC!

If you don't want to attach the drill press to the wall, do what I did. It is very stable and you don't loose any more floor space than you would attaching it to the wall.

I really like that base unit, John. Can you tell me its origin?

It is a cut down model 10 base.

I should have guessed that but I did not look close enough at the red platform. I thought it was all metal. I still like it.

That is the original base that the 10ER was mounted on. I just cut the wood top down so the 45º angle braces met in the middle. That way they can both be attached with one lag screw. It was done as a down and dirty proof of concept. The machine I am refurbing now will become the drill press

As JPG said there was an early Pulley set that did not have the lip on the floating sheave like yours. That was the first change made to the Speed Changer. I have had many Speed Changers with both the 0-8 and 0-5 scales but none without the lip on the floating sheave. The spacing on the scales is the same just 6-8 left off the later and more common ones. 0 to 5 is all that has been used on them and 6 - 8 should have never been on the scale. It just adds confusion. JPG said the belt could go lower into the pulley on the first ones without the lip on the floating sheave but like the later ones should not touch the lip or sleeve when adjusted correctly.

I'm sure John will answer it but his Drill Press Model 10ER is mounted on Shopsmith Bench Ends with shorter boards. I have seen one mounted to a wall but given the choice I would prefer the set up like John's.
