Yes, that appears to be the case from Ed's last picture. However, is that shoulder long enough for the arm set screw to engage it? Apparently it is since he did it.

If you let the the tail stock adapter drop far enough, the set screw will secure it. The 5/8 portion will be slightly shorter proud of the arm, but there is enough to secure the faceplate.

It is a bit of a balancing act but it works. The trick is to get the arm set screw to catch the shaft and the face place set screw to get enough grip on the flat.

The idea is in one of the older the PTWFE, they don't use the face plate but simply clamp to the arm. When I have time I will try and find it and give you a page reference and edition.....

Ah - Now I understand. Was easy to take 3/4 threaded rod and grind one end down to 5/8. Made an adapter to connect a face plate to the tool rest arm SIMILAR to Reible using a tailstock chuck adapter for the same purpose. i.e. the low $$$ approach! Easy peasy. Thanks all.

It's how I made my own tailstock adapter to work for Ed Reible's way to mount a gouge to the tool rest arm. Does that make sense now?
