Thank you all for the responses and helpful input; Roy and Russ were on target with the problem being with the miter gauge. Last night I re-checked both the square (using the pencil & lines on a piece of wood) and the miter gauge. The square was dead on but the miter gauge, when looked at with a lot of suspicion, was determined to be not square by a degree of gnat leg. Once this was corrected out of the tool, I was able to pass the square, while held onto the miter tool, by the blade with no deflection forward and back. I was so excited the wife came and checked on me to be sure the neighbor's wife had not wandered over! Thanks again to everyone. Have a great day!

Glad that we were able to identify and solve the problem. I admire that you use proper measurement terminology as well as your sense of humor.

Oh, and a belated welcome to the forum.

A good check of miter gauge 'squareness' is to place it upside down with the head against the front of table/raill. Good way to set it as well.

Glad to hear you were able to figure it out.

Something to note about the Shopsmith Bandsaw in case you find it is the table is at a slight angle (infeed to outfeed) to the blade as it comes from the factory. You can check it with a square against the back of the blade. The table can be made to be 90° to the blade by shimming the table to the trunnions. There has been a discussion about this in another thread. Some users are fine with it being as from the factory while others prefer to have the table at 90° to the blade.
