Update: I went ahead and took a gamble. I ordered the double bearing quill from shopsmith. They said it wouldnt work. But it fit perfectly in the headstock. It also came with a new spline coupler piece to connect to the drive shaft. (I suspect the spline coupler was the real problem after I measured it and found it off by several thousandths). In the end, I replaced all the bearings, installed the new double bearing quill. And all the end play magically disappeared. Now that lathe chuck is spinning nice and true. Total investment was about $350 in parts. Thanks guys

So I have come to the conclusion that I have been confused re MVII quill.

My MVII had a quill with a cutoff splined shaft.

Purchased a supposedly MVII quill and it also was shorter.

I recently purchased an entire upper drive train(MVII quill and drive sleeve) and the quill matches M5/V quills that I have.

SOOOOO if a new two bearing quill will fit a MVII, then all that above is confusion factor.

I really didn't know what to expect from my ordered parts. The girl I spoke with at Shopsmith wasn't to knowledgeable nor helpful. I truly expected to have to return the parts. But ironically they worked. My SN is 405187 so its the Magna model. BTW, my shaft had radial play. The axial play was minimal. If anyone wants my old single bearing quill I'll send it your way. It has a new bearing.
