If your pen or what ever you are turning has any inclusions or cracks in it you can use a thin CA glue and some shavings from the wood you're using and press it into the area of repair, let dry and continue to turn on the lathe as normal. Also on spalted wood you can also use a sanding sealer to help stop the fraying of the fibers and again sharp sharp tools, because you can not cheat when turning spalted wood. The sharper the tool the less sand is needed too.
