Actually I'm going to leave this strip sander in the box. Come early April ( or when the snow melts), it will make the grand trip up I75 (past your place), and then across the mighty Mac bridge.

When in Gainesville, my son has a strip sander that he brings over for one of our "sharpening" nights.

About the same time I will be in Gatlinburg(TN). Drive careful through the I75/64 common roadway!

Does anybody like their SS jointer? I'm not real crazy about mine. I'm not getting as flat a face on a board as I would like. Not to mention that the widest board it can handle is 3 1/2 inches. I take woodworking classes at Cerritos College. After using a professional jointer, the SS one is a bit disappointing. I like my SS planer a lot. It does a great job and my SS bandsaw does a pretty fair job. My dust collector does a decent job too.

I think you should just send me your disappointing jointer and go buy yourself a nice big professional one to replace it. I could probably be talked into paying the shipping costs.

It is entirely possible to get twist in - twist out, and cup in - cup out, using the jointer. There is an "art" - a method of working a board through a jointer in order to flatten it. For a board with twist, sometimes you have to partially run the board thru to mill off a high corner, and then turn the board around and mill the opposite high side.

I remember a posting on another forum where members were lamenting the fact that their jointer was not as wide as their planer. It seems that those who had 6" jointers longed for 8" or "10" jointers, and those who had 8" or 10" machines longed for 12". This type of "longing" can get you into a very huge and expensive jointer weighing 2000 lbs or more.

And then, some "wiseguy" piped in with a "whatsamatterwithyouguys" response; Stating that with a pair of winding sticks and a hand plane, in just a few minutes, he can address the cup and twist problem on a board, and then send it through his planer.

I was sold. I now use my Shopsmith jointer strictly for edge jointing. With a heavy duty roller stand (Rockler #43399) to support the outfeed, I have successfully jointed and glued boards as long as 103 inches.

Since being thus enlightened, I have taken classes at Highland Woodworking on sharpening and using hand planes. Having acquired several nice planes, including some vintage Stanley/Bailey models I am developing a new and highly enjoyable woodworking skill.

Keep it up! Maybe someday somebody will actually take you up on your 'offers':D
