Hi Gang;
Several years ago I removed the bearings on the jointer shaft by using a Wonder Bar ( AKA universal house key, AKA pry bar ) by putting the cutter head in a vise (after removing the blades) and putting the straight end of the bar behind the bearings. I expected a lot of resistance but when I pulled on the bars the bearing on the short shaft flew across the garage. The bearing on the long shaft moved far enough to get a small puller on the bearing.
As I recall the bearings were only a .001 inch press fit on the part of the shaft closest to the cutter head.

I have to replace the cutter head. The shaft is bent. I don't know how it got bent but it is and I don't believe it was part of the original problem.:o

It will have to wait for awhile. Budget does not allow for immediate replacement. I'll have to sharpen some hand tools or make heavier use of the conical sander.

There is good news on the horizon, Dusty! Although the cutterhead (517363) seems expensive, you get a lot of stuff with it. You get new bearings, new blades, new wedges/screws, and even those bearing housings (these cost $50 each). You will be happy with the purchase.

BTW I just noticed the shiny part (that was under the bearing) of your old cutter head shaft. Looks like you had a problem almost like the one I had.

This is a guess --- Your bearing slid (spun) on the shaft, heated it and bent it. Mine just spun and wore away the shaft so the shaft wobbled, because the shaft no longer filled the bearing.

P.S. I am also guessing the ROOT cause of your problem is the same as mine. The bearing froze and wore away at the cutter head shaft.

I thought that my jointer was going to be out of service for awhile. Nope. I received confirmation today that my order has been processed and shipped.

How about that. Ordered on Friday and Shipped on Monday. This is beginning to feel like the good ole days. I don't have a single backorder. The down side - yes, there is a down side - will occur when the finance manager sees all those charges come due at the same time. I will be in trouble when that becomes obvious to her. I was sort of counting on them being spread out a bit.

Oh well. Now I can order something next month. Band saw blades I believe. I haven't purchased band saw blades in a month of Sundays.

DON'T mention Sunday, Dusty. My 1/4 blade broke while free running after a cut. Ordered a new one this morning. And speaking of band saws, have you ever lubed the lower guide (99)shaft/screw(104)?

No, I do not believe I have lubricated there. I have had difficulty making that adjustment and chose to dismantle the Lower Blade Guide to see why but I don't believe I lubricated. If I recall, just taking it apart and putting it back together (free of compacted dust) resolved the issue.

Hmm.. You guys are making me want to completely disassemble my jointer before it ever gets used (by me).. Luckily mine is already in need of major TLC including a week long electrolysis bath as the rust has been doing much work on it.

Oops - somehow we transitiuoned from jointer to band saw and back. I have too many repair actions going at once. This ole man can't keep up.

I removed my jointer head and sent it to Shopsmith after removing the knives. Shipping was $12.75 insured. Two weeks later they called and said it would cost only $40.36 parts & labor including return shipping to replace my bearings! Still a terrific company!
