Great link. Now I know where I can buy sex bolts. I didn't even know they existed. This group is an educational experience!
Even more important they also have small oval head slotted steel wood screws. Only problem is they come in the convenient box of 10000.

I believe(not due to some knowledge I am privy to) the extended(dog) points are flat ended. Their purpose is to penetrate into a hole/slot in the material being screwed into. Examples: Slot on top of the quill shaft where the extended set screw sets in the groove and thus prevents the quill shaft from rotating. A shaft may be bored so the extended tip acts like a key when extended into the shaft. They also are made with nylon extensions(dog). I would think one of these would be appropriate for the SS quill /groove application.

The quill housing set screws I removed from later made (2000s) Shopsmith "C" headstocks has a brass or bronze tip on the them. I had been using the extended brass tip set screws as I find the steel tip ones were causing a burr along the sides of the quill housing groove plus causing a small ding on the sides of the housing groove where the quill housing was retracted/resting. I believe these dings were from vibration when the quill was not being extended.

Thanks for taking care of my dirty work dusty. jpg was all over me regarding the new half dog term he saw!:D

Somehow, I missed this thread continuing. I was surprised this morning when I went into it to see all the posts since I last was here. I think I need to change my system of seeing what posts are new. I usually do the "New Posts", "show firist unread" method but as I mentioned before, that isn't always reliable. You wonder, "Well if you realized it isn't reliable, why do you continue to do it!!" Answer:

chuck - extended tip aka half dog have flat ends. They are typically used in applications similar to SS quill where it's function is to ride in a slot and prevent either rotation or acts as a stop. If it is riding in a slot (keyway) the component obviously can not rotated. It the slot has a square end, the half dog, when contacting it, will act as a stop.
