I've had success in the past with a manual impact screwdriver. These are hammer operated, so you need plenty of access room. It basically converts the force of the hammer blow into a simultaneous combination of impact and torque. The downside to these is that they can be hard on the screw head.

If heat is the key, could heating the screw with a high temp soldering iron or a heat gun work?

Maybe, but you'd likely need a lot more heat than that (depending on how stuck it is). Think glowing red hot. When you weld a nut to a stuck fastener, you're zapping it with very intense, very localized heat. That breaks the bond between the fastener and whatever it's stuck in
