Welcome to the forum. As you have seen, there is a great deal of help to be had here. I can't offer much help, but these guys know the machines and wood working. You have far more skill than I had to start, so you will be fine. I can tell you that I have never been led astray. When I first looked over the machine, the quill would get stuck if extended over halfway. I would have to nudge the lever a few times to get it to retract. The spring was also noisy toward the end of its travel.

I disassembled pretty much everything in the headstock and found dust packed into the groove on the top of the quill and in the quill spring. I cleaned everything out and started to reassemble the quill return. I preloaded the spring with two full turns, and I'm hearing noise from the spring after the first turn. Is this normal? I need to decide whether or not to put the spring housing on my shopping list.

I'm glad I took the spring housing off the shaft for cleaning, but it was kind of a pain to put back on. I probably would have had a mental breakdown if not for the help from previous posts on the subject.

You only need another spring housing, spring or quill feed pinion if any of them are broken. Quill Feed Spring noise is common problem. Most people live with it. I move the snap ring #38 out to the threads on the quill feed pinion and pull the spring housing to the snap ring. I spray a dry lube into the open end of the spring housing to coat the spring. Reset the snap ring and spring noise is no more. I do this to all the Quill Feed Assemblies.

Today I placed my order for replacement parts. I ordered a new speed control assembly, control sheave, drive belt, and some hardware it was missing. I also had time to perform a full inventory of my purchase. Here is what my ~$500 investment got me:

Does it seem like I am missing anything critical? I feel like I got a pretty good deal for what I paid. Sorry for the long post...

Hi,

The small table is a Front Table Extension (505626) it gives you 7" more space by attaching to the front of the main table.

It is an INFEED table. Formally called (or named) " MARK V 500 Front Table Extension" http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/item ... =Find+Item

555306 is for outfeed support on a 500.

Thanks for the help on that extension table. It looks like it gives you more room for using the miter gauge on wider pieces. That is something I could use on my 10" Craftsman band saw, which I guess I will be using for longer than I hoped... I placed my parts order over the weekend and called for parts availability today. The speed control assy and control sheave assy are both on backorder
