I am guessing that for whatever reason, the 'original' tie bar did not fit properly on the way tubes or was 'loose'.

Since it 'broke' when dropped, it probably was cracked.

We all tend to focus on getting the units aligned vertically and side to side. Well and good, but not always the whole story.

It's possible to get the accessories cocked with the ecentric tubes. So while everything seems to line up, they actually don't. With some equipment, this misalignment would be hard to see.

Bandsaw for example. You can't sight along its shaft well to see if it is on the same axis as the headstock. The bandsaw itself is in the way.

So you c an get the two recepticals lined up vertically and horizontally, but still not have their axis aligned. This will cause wear inside the coupler.

Admittedly, this isn't something that is going to be a common problem, but it can be done. Especially if you've got the offset tubes far over to one side or the other.

I 'see'! but then I use a straight edge to check alignment.

Yes you must remove the hubs.;)
