I have always determined rotation by by checking the shaft rotation direction from the side of the motor where the shaft exits the housing. So by my way of judging the rotation, a Mark V motor rotates clockwise and the saw blade rotates counter clockwise.

So, it looks like everyone is in agreement: The SS motor shaft turns CW and the blade on the ShopSmith does go CCW! That is what I thought to begin with, but I respect Dusty's opinion (even when I do knot agree with it), and he had stated that the blade goes CW, and that confused me.

Forget the clock, everything is going digital anyway.
The "front" of any woodworking machine is where the wood is "normally" fed into it. On a Shopsmith the switch, speed control and carriage controls are all on the "front". The ends are not front or back. They are left and right just as with a workbench.
On all Shopsmiths except the Mark VII "ALL" shafts turn with the top of the shaft moving toward the front... So does the blade...

Now to p1$$ off everybody... This whole discussion borders on silly... It is my opinion that if you do not walk up to any such machine with a full understanding automatically in your head of which direction everything there is turning and why it is functioning as it is then you are not yet qualified to be operating that machine...

For Pete's sake folks somebody do something... Pick up a board and chop it off and build a birdhouse or something. This forum has become so tedious lately that I have about quit coming here at all.
One of the things a number of people remember most about my long deceased father was his uncanny ability to drag out any pleasant 20 minute job into two hours (or sometimes two days) of mind numbing drudgery...

Thanks to all respondents. I got everything from the thread that I needed (and then some:).
After teaching high school for 31 years, I think the CW/CCW will soon be an extinct term anyway; most students have digital watches, and will probably be unfamiliar with the terms.

At the risk of alienating Farmer further, If we no longer refer to motor rotation as CW/CCW, what is going to 'replace it'?

ANNND at the risk of pi$$ing Farmer off, ----- where is the 'front' of the ss when raised into the 'drill press position'?:D

I totally agree with his assertion re 'If ya do NOT know(with no doubt) which direction it will move/rotate when turned on, ya hadn't oughta be operating it!'. Yah I elongated it!

If you think CW/CCW is tough try explaining to a room full of young ladies why plumbing fittings and some electrical fittings are male and female...

On a drill press it is the face you stand in front of but on a Shopsmith even in drill press mode it is still a Shopsmith first... The front is still the face with the speed control. At least it is to me.

Yes I appreciate the contradiction. One we have on the farm is when you have an elevator or grain auger set up to a bin or crib and tell an employee to move it "forward" 2". Actually my father and I used to argue about that one (friendly arguments) He always said forward was toward the bin. I always said that forward was away from the bin because that was the hitch end for that unit and the direction that you pulled it down the road in transport. I said that you pull it forward then "back" it up to the bin.
