What bothers me is that monkeyvet's "serial number" (SS-77145) does not look like a serial number and the number doesn't fit into the data base in the right location and it does not look like a date code.

:eek:Aaaaw, maybe we just don't know what a really modern date code looks like I have not laid eyes on but one machine that is newer than mine (other than at the TA sessions maybe) and I didn'y pay attention to the serial number.

Someone with a 2000 or later vintage Shopsmith - please tell us what your serial number is and when it was purchased.
Dusty,

The first - I purchased new in 2006 as a 520 serial number 03-18-06
The second one purchased used in April of 2009 was a 510 serial number 03-10-05 as a 50th Anniversary Model. I hope this helps. Yes the date codes are shown exactly as presented here. Jim

Thank you, Jim. At least this tells us that the date code system has not changed format.

SS-77415 - that is now the question. NO - there might be one other. Is it possible that "C" headstocks and red safety switches have been around a lot longer than we think?

That is what I am talking about! monkeyvet's serial number is stamped on the vent plate, a practice done PRE your machine, so when did they go to the sticky label? His serial number does look exactly like a 1981 Jan-Feb serial number wood look like, but the "C" headstock does knot match the serial number, nor the serial number location! I believe that his headstock has been either factory updated or modified by someone else. The vent plate (with both the number itself AND it's location) leads me to believe that it is from a 1981 unit, but the headstock (or at least the part with the switch mounted) is post 1991.

My 510 was purchased in August of 2004. It has a sticker on the front of the headstock that is separate from the warning label and stuck on the headstock right below it. No data on the vent plate or end of the headstock. It overlaps a bit so I guess it was placed on after the warning label. The serial number is 03-03-04, just as expected. Right above that number is a "model Number" 55924. I don't know what that means, but it has the same number of digits as your "mystery number". I will look at my paper work to see if there is info on that . Hope this helps.

Dusty,
Does your serial number actually look like "112291"? or is it really 11-22-91? Like Jim's, mine has the hyphens!

It would appear a call to Shopsmith is in order. Perhaps they can resolve the mystery. I checked every tag and label on every portion of both Mark V's and even the frame of my Shorty. I also am baffled. Fjimp

It is without hyphens.

Now 555539 I do not believe is a Mark V model number. I think 555539 is a Headstock. Meaning - I have Headstock Model Number 555539, Serial Number 112291.

Photo images have been changed.

Gee this looks like an interesting thread to pop some more information in. I have a headstock date code 021391 and it is a "B". Shopsmith shows that the "C" starts 2/21/91.

1) The vent plate says Jan/Feb 81.

2) The manuals etc. say early 1980's.

3) The "C" headstock says updated/repaired/replaced/??? after 1990.

4) The paint says after 1978??? Were the 'gray smooth' all pre ss Inc.?

5) Did all the ss Inc. have the small vertical position locking screw(either with or without the hex socket)?

Answers to 4 & 5 May provide clues, but I think all the parts are ss Inc. output.

The locking screw MAY help narrow down the date of the frame, IF the changeover dates are known(large/small/hex head).

In any event, a couple of parts are missing from the operator side of the quill feed. A minor 'problem'.
