I now see that the snow and ice here in Western Pennsylvania is not that bad.

Sorry for all the white stuff you folks are having to live in and those cold temps. We've had some hard freezes along the Florida Gulf Coast. Got our first sleet this morning, but no official recording of it. Our night temps are going to be in the 30's most of the week with a projected 29 a night or two. Daytime highs in the upper 50's. Sorry for rubbing it in, but we have some places for sale here rather cheap. Across the street, a 2 story brick with 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths, fenced front and back yard, a tropical room and 1 car garage is going for $185K. Sure, it's 60 years old, but in great shape. More of them down the street. Come on down.

Appreciate the invitation but you guys have bugs, gators, and lizards...I think I'll just enjoy my 3 feet of snow.

I am pretty well nailed down here in Central Indiana these days.
A few years ago Diana and I talked about selling a mini-farm we have in the next county and putting some of the money into a motor-home and doing some rather extensive traveling. Maybe even spending winters from January to mid March in a warmer climate. Much like my ill-fated move to Southern California, plans changed... Three things were the primary factors. One, we simply decided that we preferred short 2 to 4 day trips. On trips we were taking we were both always ready to be back home after a few days. Two, we have 3 generations of descendants here and like spending time with them. Third, we got into horses... Now we have all of our boarding clients and almost everyday is fun. OK, not the ice days. I'll have the second larger round pen sat up by spring (small one is 36', second one will be 62'). The location of both is next to the existing outdoor arena and the fenced kids playground Many evenings will be spent sitting in lawn chairs around a fire ring visiting and watching folks working with their horses. Neighbors tend to drop by too. We did that last fall except we spent the whole fall in a burn ban. This year we expect a lot of bonfires, lots of horse activities. I have also been planting trees, shrubs and flowers around the 4 miles of grass lanes around the farm and through the 2 small woods.
With all of that going on and my new woodshop, my mechanics/metal shop and our own 5 horses why would I want to be gone for long periods at a time. I have basically built my vacation spot right here.
Still a warmer January and February would be nice.

Last week we got 4-6 inches of snow and then the temperature bottomed out a -5 one night, a new record low. Yesterday it finally warmed up enough to clear the major road, but the forecast is for freezing drizzle, rain and snow today and tomorrow and back to sub-zero nights by Wednesday. I don't think the geothermal heat pump has shut off in over a week. I don't mind it, but my old tin barn is simply too cold to work in for more than a few minutes. I've been bringing in chisels and saw blades and sharpening them just to have something to do. Oh well, "this too shall pass."

I will start planning accordingly. This is just in time as I have a few gifts that need to be completed soon.

I'm counting on a couple days earlier than that, Farmer. I have rod iron fence to paint and a stone patio to repair. These must be done before it gets hot. That leaves me just a few weeks to get done.

Painting is my most disliked tasks and I don't care what the paint is to be put on more gets on me than the project.

at least that is my interpretation of the forecast. We are due to get another 4" to 7" of snow on Wednesday. Heck, we usually don't get 4" of snow all year totalled.

But it isn't a total loss. I'm learning that I can stay pretty warm handplaning rough lumber with a 9" smoothing plane. If I can just keep my feet from getting cold.

$185 K that is expensive! Aren't there any foreclosures your way?
Down here we have developments with half the houses sitting empty.

And if you are looking for really cheap housing go to Port St Lucie they have whole developments with new 3 and 4 bedrooms, 2 and 3 baths and 2 and 3 car attached garages sitting there in foreclosure. They can be had cheap but you might be the only person in the neighbor hood and you have to stay alert for people breaking in to steal the air conditioner and copper plumbing.
