I've got a copy of the Craftsman Router-Crafter manual and it shows that there is a fixed spacing of 6 3/4" between the spirals. In other words, the router travels 6 3/4" with each rotation of the spindle being turned. But you can make multiple starts. In addition, there are limits to how close to the ends of the turning you can begin or end a spiral because of the size of the Router-Crafter's carriage and headstock. Also, you really can't apply roping or spirals to a spindle using a metal lathe because they work in threads per inch and these router gizmos are in inches per thread. This is more like the rifiling twist in a gun barrel than threads on a common bolt.

I thin there were at least two variations of the Sears unit. I think the new improved one had more options and came with a selection of gears. I could be wrong but that is what I seem to remember.

My son is a computer engineering major and is looking for a project to turn in cnc. I am going to offer to pay for it and I will build the actual mill. He will just have to connect the stepper motors and do the programing.
