What purpose would it be to have 4 different length tubes? I am a little confused by your comment can you clarify please?

You don't have to cut up four tubes to get a set of four for a mini.

I pair(2) of regular length tubes can be made into a set of four for a mini.

A single way tubes can be cut into one @ 25 5/8 plus one @ 26 3/8; therefore, a pair of ways will yield a set of four for a mini.

If you want to use a pair(2) of bench tubes instead - you get a mini that is 3/8" longer.

Got it excuse my ignorant lack of common sense on what JPG was trying to express to me. Should have been plainly clear but sometimes the old mind just isn't there.

On another note I called Dave Ruggles in NY who sells headstock castings and had him ship me a new Type B casting to replace the one that unfortunately broke while removing the Poly V drive shaft yesterday. So I should be back in business again soon with the new Mark V. Really upset me that happened as I had no issues with my other two machines taking them apart and replacing all of the bearings but this one was definitely being obstinent and ornery. So I guess instead of backing off and taking some more time to get it out I just got mad and hit the shaft a little too hard.................DUH!:mad: I had plenty of new bearings for the quill but I have to order the ones for the Poly V drive so I am going to get the motor bearings as well and do those at the same time. The outer shell of the machine was pristine but when I got inside and started removing stuff that is when the rust started to rear it's ugly head most of which was internal to the bearings and shafts and I assume the reason I had such a hard time getting the drive shaft out without breaking the casting. Live and learn!

Glad to hear that Dave was able to help you out with a casting. He's a good guy.

On the Mini tubes...my initial suggestion (cut bench tube in half, then cut way tube to 3/4" less than the resulting cut bench tube) can yield to sets of Mini tubes from one set of Mark V tubes. If you want a little more length in your Mini you will have to use all 4 tubes from the Mark V.

This may be obvious to someone who has rebuilt more than one or two Mark Vs, but what happens if you just cut the way in half and then the bench in half? What does not fit right? The resulting delta is 3/16".

Actually the difference between the 'cut' way tubes and bench tubes should be about 3/8". Which is 3/8" from the Shopsmith 'designed' 3/4" difference. This would result in the bench tubes having to be inserted 3/8" further into the headstock casting than they would normally be inserted.

This should not normally cause a problem unless you are inserting an accessory whose tubes are longer and might hit the bench tubes (such as an extension table).

I cannot afford the possibility of the interference since my Mini could end up from Canada to Puerto Rico to Austrailia (oh and any of the 50 United States).:)

Thanks Rob. That clears it all up for me. I recalled when I reassembled the Mark V that I built from parts and pieces that the way tubes bottom out in their receptacles while one end of the bench tubes could be inserted too far.

Actually, what happened was I built up the base arm and head rest assemblies with a pair of bench tubes and then when I attempted to install the way tubes they did not fit (too long). I had the bench tubes inserted too far.

I still wonder why that end does not have a built in stop to prevent the tubes from being inserted too far.
