At the risk of repeating myself:

Imust be missing something here! Why would anyone want to be able to turn a table saw or drill press or lathe on/off OR control speed while standing somewhere other than right at the machine?

Dusty,

I share your concern. While I use my remote for the dust collector, I'm not sure the capability to turn off the headstock vis remote is such a good idea, primarily for safety reasons. In woodworking, safety is becoming an increasing concern as evidenced by other threads.

Consider the situation where you are using the bandsaw. Therefore you are on the end of the machine, and would have to move around the table to get to the power switch. Given that scenario, what if you want to reduce the speed mid cut (ie: start hitting heart wood), or what if the blade comes off mid-cut? Either of those scenarios would be situations where it would be best to be able to shutdown the unit from the bandsaw rather than having to fully disengage the workpiece. Especially consider the situation where you are working with a long or wide board - then the workpiece is physically between you and the headstock.

For turning, the examples on nova's website are pretty good. http://www.teknatool.com/products/lathe ... AL_Web.pdf shows someone turning a large piece. It is a nice concept to be able to shutdown/adjust speed (and maybe even restart?) the unit while still down at the far end of the turning.

Personally, I would really want two remotes. One for the wrist with start/stop and speed controls, and a magnetic or otherwise relocatable kill switch (for jpg's sake, when I mean kill switch in this case I really mean stop the motor, but not fully kill the power). The wrist one I would use for turning and such. The kill switch (ideally paddle style) would be more for safety and I would position it on a given SPT at the given time. A nice feature might be for it to use the same bracket as the utility light.

A remote control could be useful for fine tuning of speed for a number of the SPT's - scroll saw, band saw, lathe and sanding purposes.
It could also save time on scroll saw blade changes for piercing cuts, sanding disk grit change overs etc....
It does depend where you stand or sit and could also improve safety as you are less likely to reach.

Okay I can buy that the premise that a remote control would be handy when using SPTs and you are located away from the normal on/off position.
In fact I think it is a great idea.

I also like the idea for sawing extremely long boards I often find myself more than an arm's length from the on/off switch. When that happens I must stop reposition myself and often the board and restart my alignment to the blade because I can't reach the switch. A remote would allow me to stand holding the end of the board sighting down the cut line to start the SS. I like it!

I would buy a remote start if it was priced right. But the whole thing is moot to me because I don't have a Power Pro because of it's pricing.

Well said Dusty which is why I haven't bothered to enter this discussion. I can find plenty of ways to cut or injure myself. A remote works great for the air filtration system, the AC and the dust collection system in my shop. Power tools NO WAY. fimp

We are talking about remote OFF, on could be very dangerous.
