A couple things come to mind.
The 'gentle tapping' needed to be against the outer race on the bearing(you mentioned using a shaft to remove???).
Be aware that some gilmer models have a slip clutch built into the main shaft pulley.
Glad it is finally 'out'. Try to figger out why it was so stubborn before reassembling.
P.S. check the inside end of the headstock main bearing bore. There should be a retaining ring there also.
