A couple things come to mind.

The 'gentle tapping' needed to be against the outer race on the bearing(you mentioned using a shaft to remove???).

Be aware that some gilmer models have a slip clutch built into the main shaft pulley.

Glad it is finally 'out'. Try to figger out why it was so stubborn before reassembling.;)

P.S. check the inside end of the headstock main bearing bore. There should be a retaining ring there also.
