I'll take a few pics of the innards, and the I.D. (iirc the tag says Shopsmith, Visalia, Oh) and try to post em.camerio wrote:Would it be possible for you to post some pictures of your ShopMate, I have never seen one and tried to research it on the net but could not find any.
Thanks.
The filter bag, btw, is about the same size as the motor housing on top, and mounts over the lip of the drum, then the lid (w/motor) goes on top. Three clamps. Super simple.

OK, I'm building my shop walls right now. Reading this thread made me think about our central vac system that is within 8' of a wall. I was gonna put a "sweep" outlet at the floor in the shop and an outlet to maybe vacuum up finer stuff. But now I am wondering how it would work to put a cyclone in corner of shop and connect central vac to it by way of an outlet. The central vac really sucks! It is vented to the outside and would be quiet in the shop. Since only a little dust makes it to the vacuum container, do y'all think this would work ? Would sure be less expensive than the shop sawdust collectors i've been looking at. Or does this idea suck? Opinions please....

Most vacuum cleaners 'really suck' - that is, they have high static pressure with high velocity. For dc you also need high volume.
The dust deputy would work well with high velocity vacuum cleaners. Question is, will it remove debris fast enough in sufficient volume.
P.S. I think for shop floor cleanup, the dd is a good idea so as to not quickly fill the vacuum filter. It might just possibly work for dc as well if it moves enough air.

I sprung for the "Deputy" ($39 from Woodcrafters) and another $8-$9 for "adapters" at Lowe's. Rigged up the central vac (1 1/4" hose) to the deputy and then an 8 foot, 2.5" hose (Lowe's $21).
First stuck the hose in some sawdust in a trash can.... did perfect. Then hooked it up to the jointer and it did perfect... all the fine dust and course pieces went into the bucket of the deputy... when I opened the central vac tank there was nothing in it ! Yeah !! And no dust in the air in the shop.
the mathmatical formula I used for this was "Pie are round, not square"...
Static velocity volume .... yada yada yada ... All I know is it worked ! I'm too old to worry about why...
Now to put outlet in wall, a remote switch to turn it on, adapters for various work stations, etc. Then hope it still works...

I have been using the dust deputy for a while.. It appears if you keep the pail no fuller than one-half you will get nothing in the vac at all.. No sawdust maybe a little bit of dust on the filter .. when it gets over half full it will starting putting sawdust into vac. went through four half pails of sawdust this winter and absolutly nothing in the vac. still use a jet dust collecter with the thickness planer because it would fill the pail quite fast. sure beats dumping the vac every so often........ good article in find wood working magazine this month on cyclones and testing vacs.. perfect setup for the small hobby shop is a dust deputy and vac. biggest reason is, dump the pail instead of the dust collecter bag..........

What effect will a larger than 5 gal. pail have on "suck" power?
I have a 30 gal. fiber drum with a metal top held tight with a "snap ring'. before I cut the hole in the top what are thoughts on this working?

I hope that would work!
I am going to use a salvaged shop vac base/lid which is much larger than 5G.
AIUI, it MUST be air tight or poor performance will result.
I do not know what effect the increased volume to maintain a vacuum in it will have. I do not know if that reduces the system available static pressure or not. I cannot think of any thing else(other than container sturdiness(rigidity)) since the debris simply falls into the 'bucket'.
I'll know better next week!:D
