I share his frustration because that was exactly the problem I was having EXCEPT I knew not to turn the shaft backward. I could not get the stud to slide up into the grove. This guy did well at hooking the stud and getting it where it should be --- then he did exactly what you do not want to do.
I don't know if he ever got it working like it should be. I sure hope so.
He needs more practice though. He never did learn to cuss.

In spite of his well documented temporary lapse of 'competence', he did quite well in restoring his goldie!:)
I have had days like that(sometimes longer).

I ain't easy. It can be done. I find it easier to hold the housing with the end of the spring slipped slightly into the 'slot' and use the housing to hold the spring while using the shaft to rotate(recoil) the spring. The spring will eventually get small enough to slide into the housing. Use a vise to hold the housing while pushing and twisting with the quill lock wingnut also works(when yer palms get tired of doing it without the vise - that way you can push/twist with two hands. It helps to form the inside end of the spring so it will not slip off the pin easily.
I have not tried it, but a radiator hose worm screw type clamp may help to squeeze and hold the spring until is is small enough.
I have quill that needs refurbing(came from somewhere in the great NorthWest). I will document that and start a thread(sometime this week!).

In order to keep that (*&%^ spring from slipping off the pin while winding the spring etc. I cause it to be under tension while under the pin head.
Forming the end to force slotted portion to wedge under pin head.

After attaching to shaft.
[ATTACH]15792[/ATTACH] I pressed the pin into the shaft as far as it would go.
Winding the spring so it will fit into housing.
[ATTACH]15793[/ATTACH] Having the wing nut on the shaft helps turning it while holding the spring outer layer.
Slipping it into the housing.

I find it easier than trying to coil the spring into the housing, then attaching the shaft.
[ATTACH]15800[/ATTACH]In the past the tension was achieved with less forming the end of the spring. The pin was shorter!
An interesting observation of the one just done. The spring will slip out of the slot etc. when rotated backwards, but ALWAYS slides back in when rotated forward.

The rest of the asm was cleaned up by wire brushing(8" mounted on Power Station) with help from a small tooth brush.
Shaft and threads before.

[ATTACH]15796[/ATTACH] The bottom of the handle socket cannot be reached with wire brush - oil it there and move on.
Feed Stop dial before.

[ATTACH]15798[/ATTACH] Brushing tends to remove the paint in the markings. It can be replaced.
Asm after
[ATTACH]15799[/ATTACH] A tooth brush will clean out inside of parts like the sleeve and the wing nuts and the quill pinion gear.
The aluminum parts clean up easily, but too aggressive brushing will break through the oxide and erode the softer material underneath. A light touch will give a nicer look.
The interior parts(serrated washers, retaining rings, were not rusted up so they are not shown being cleaned up although they were given a brief brushing.
No that is not an OEM handle!;)

This was a great presentation of the quill and quill spring assembly. I only hope that I never again need to deal with that spring. If I do, I am likely to buy a new quill.

I will certainly keep that offer in mind. I would prefer to never deal with another quill spring.
