Wow welding on the Shopsmith. I would have worried about screwing up the motor and bearings and slag getting on bench and way tubes.
I once welded my truck bumper and ended up with a interesting noise in the transmission. That is when I learned electricity takes ingesting paths to complete it's circuit. I was grounded on frame not more than a 3 feet from my weld.
