Amen on the manufacturing comment. We are discussing this in the community thread after all. Shopsmith rocks or we all wouldn't be on their forum, discussing their products and promoting them. I wish the company i work at/business had this loyal a following. We can still bitch about prices. And we will still support the company when we can. Not to mention the 2 shopsmith customers I just recruited for them.
That said, pricing, and surrounding issues are fair game to complain about. Politics is part of that. Oil, resources etc are just a part of a problem we have been digging in for 30 years. I'm not ranting about Obama. I'm ranting about a culture change...one where we get back to what made us great; work ethic, manufacturing and a sound fiscal policy. Protectionist? Well maybe I am...heck the other way aint working.

Given the new price $260.10 cents is well worth it. Now I will be forced to tear up the shop and upgrade my 50th Anniversary 520 to a Mark 7. Such is life, I thank God I was able to do this upgrade at this point in time. Jim
Me too!
My double tilt is due on Thursday, ordered March 24.

pennview wrote:I'm afraid that government statistics are just that. I've attached a few articles regarding permits below and in one of them you can see that permits issued previously were claimed in 2011. Kind of like unemployment statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics when you don't count unemployed folks because they are "no longer looking for work." Only the government could issue a statistic saying the unemployment rate declined in a month when fewer people were employed than the month before, as was the case earlier this year. Moreover, fewer people are employed today than when Obama took office!
Here is an excerpt from an article written in mid-January of this year from this web site on oil leases (
http://rlch.org/news/federal-leasing-oi ... w-api-says )
"The Interior Department sold just over 600 new oil and gas leases on public lands in Western states in 2011, the lowest total in at least a quarter-century, according to a new report commissioned by the American Petroleum Institute.
While Interior reported issuing 1,461 leases last year in energy-producing states including Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Utah and Wyoming, the majority of those leases were originally sold years ago and had been held up by legal challenges, the report says.
The Bureau of Land Management last year released about $50 million worth of backlogged leases in Wyoming after evaluating their impacts on sage grouse and other resources, the agency said.
The leases were tallied as "issued" in 2011, even though they may have been sold in previous years, API argued in a report accusing the Obama administration of restricting access to public lands.
In addition, BLM issued 3,851 new drilling permits in the five states in 2011, a slight dip below the 2009-2010 average but 40 percent below the final two years of the George W. Bush administration.
"Federal lands policies are slowing the development of vitally needed energy," said Kyle Isakower, API's vice president of regulatory and economic policy, in a statement. "This undermines America's energy security and deprives the nation of a much needed spur to job creation and economic growth."
And, here is excerpt regarding oil permits in the Gulf of Mexico from the end of February from this site (
http://www.nationalreview.com/campaign- ... t-slowdown )
"Yesterday, I reported on Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal pointing out that during a late winter of skyrocketing gasoline prices, the president who keeps taking credit for increased domestic oil production has actually slowed the approval of leases and permits in the Gulf of Mexico to a crawl.
A report by Greater New Orleans Inc., an organization of businesses large and small in Southeast Louisiana, lays out how the Obama administration is approving only a fraction of the new permits, significantly less than preceding administrations in both deepwater projects and shallow water projects, that getting approval from Obama’s Department of Interior takes much longer than before he took office, and how Obama’s administration rejects a much higher percentage of proposals for drilling than before he took office."
You can find these stories all day long on the internet. Unfortunately, ABC, NBC and CBS can't find the time to report the facts. But they do have time to tout Obama's claims of increased oil production.
Pennview,
Huh? Even accepting API's revised permit count, API still credits Obama with 3851 "new" permits issued in 2011. While below the peak years of the Bush administration, API's 3851 "new" permit count is still more than the total number of permits issued in any year going back to 1988 save for a few peak years during Bush's administration and is, in fact, still higher than the total number of permits issued during several years of Bush's administration.
So I guess all I can say is thanks for agreeing with me.
In all seriousness, I'm an independent and have been for years. I don't automatically believe everything either the Dems or the Republicans say, nor do I believe everything I hear on ABC, NBC, CBS or FOX. And I certainly don't believe everything I read on the internet -- except for the Shopsmith-related content I read on this forum, which has yet to steer me wrong.

Back to the Price Increase:
Yup, it really did happen. I tallied the last fifteen items that I purchased from Shopsmith and compared the before and after prices.
These fifteen items cost me $597.65.
If I purchased them this morning, the same fifteen items would cost $726.99.
This is a 22% increase. Not as bad as I had expected.
If I bought the twelve items on the Most Frequently Purchased list, they would today cost $49.63 more than if I had purchased them a year ago. A year ago, the list would have cost $320.67. On this list, the most notable increase was the price of wedges which increased 70.8%. Six items on the list did not change at all.

Just placed an order since the drill chuck is on sale for 10% off through tomorrow. Shipping was high, but not overly excessive. However, I did look at other items that I might want and perhaps would order since they were lightweight.
Added a 5/32nd long handled Allen wrench and the S&H increased $2.50. At $7.50 for a single allen wrench it was a no-go for me. Also was hoping to get the the parts to fix my jointer since the spring on the guard is missing. Unfortunately, a 1983 jointer only can be serviced by buying a new guard - at least if I get the parts from Shopsmith.

For "local" hardware items (like springs etc.) that may not be something that you can get at a big box store or Walmart I have very good luck with our local Ace Hardware. I can usually find it cheaper on line someplace but not when you add any shipping and handling...
I also have good luck on some stuff for general shop use at
www.natauto.com
Ask them to send you their free catalog. They have a lot more than what is in the catalog too and their phone staff is good. They are local to me but ship all over.
